NEWS!!I am deeply honoured and profoundly grateful to have be appointed Poet Laureate for Stoke-on-Trent for 2026–2028.
To be entrusted with this role by a city built on resilience, creativity and heritage is an incredible privilege. Stoke-on-Trent has always been a place of creativity, where art is not a luxury, it’s a way of life. To serve as poet laureate here means standing among generations of makers, dreamers, and storytellers who shaped this city long before me and will continue long after. I have enormous shoes to follow in the footsteps of. The current Poet Laureate, Nick Degg, is not only one of the finest poets this city has produced, but one of the finest in the country. It’s an honour, and frankly quite a scary one, to think I will be taking up that position in May after Nick, and the marvellous work he’s created and shared with us all during his tenure. Thank you to Nick, the other fantastic panel of poets (Stephen Seabridge, Gabriella Gay and the elusive Poet laureate of Twitter - Brian Bilston) and the council members at Stoke-on-Trent City Council who have bestowed this honour on me, Congratulations also go to Cameron Hart (Young Poet Laureate) and Kate Leake (Creativity Laureate). Thank you to everyone who has supported my work, believed in my voice, and encouraged me to keep writing - my wife, children, family and friends, and the people of Stoke-on-Trent who continue to inspire me every day. I’m excited to spend the next two years celebrating our shared identity, amplifying local voices, and creating poetry that reflects the strength, humour, and soul of this incredible city.
